  • Intel Completes 10-core Xeon Processors

Intel has just released information on its latest addition to the Xeon lineup of high-end server processors. Featured are 29 new chips for this series, ten of which are 10-core models and are codenamed Westmere-EX. Specifications are varied at this point and cover a wide range of prices and installation.

Speeds on the Westmere series start as low as 2.0GHz and up. Power draw is less than expected starting at 105W and 130W TDP (thermal design power). On-chip cache ranges from 24 MB to 30 MB (L3). Socket support for these processors is an FC-LGA8 (LGA 771) package.

However with performance comes price. the less expensive sells for $2,558, while the most expensive is priced at $4,616. We should be seeing these very soon in the server world, as for mainstream home use, for the price, it's practical applications are limited.

What remains is to see if the Santa Clara, California-based chip giant manages to increase the core count even further before AMD gets around to doing the same.

Ohh I love that they are on the LGA 771 socket, I'm sooo sick of Intel always switching out for a new socket every 6 months.

Yes agreed. That is the one area where AMD trumps Intel.

Ya, just seen that. It sucks when your stuff becomes obsolete so fast, but I prefer that over slowdown in technology development. Especially stuff that gets to the consumer market.

What makes me mad is this, Intel has the next 4-10 gens of CPUs all ready developed. They just release them slowly in-order to make a more money.

Now I am ok with that, but what they need to do is future proof the socket and chip-set, so the next 2-3 gens will stick with the same socket.

I'm wondering when we'll see these in Desktop CPU's.

With that CPU socket, probably never. For a 10-core sandy bridge(or later), probably not for another 2 years I'd guess.

Focking hell... Well but no software that can use not even 50% of that .... thing

10 cores, the bright future. 10 years ago it was unthinkable, 10 years ahead of us it will be old as hell... technology...
I would definetly buy it if it wasn't expensive

a core? You mean 10 cores right ?
1 core is old by now already
