  • EVGA SR-3 Motherboard Announced

We've seen some pretty awesome motherboards announced at Computex this year, but probably the most extreme of them all is the latest announcement from EVGA. EVGA has expanded on their very high-end SR-2 motherboards, and is gearing up to launch the replacement: the EVGA Super Record 3 (SR-3).

The SR-3, will be keeping a lot of the similar styling and layout. This model, like the SR-2 will be a 2P high-end desktop/workstation motherboard with the HPTX form-factor. For the CPU, It features two Intel LGA2011 Ivy Bridge sockets, which can hold 2P-capable Xeon processors. However, still no official word yet that the LGA2011 Core i7 "Sandy Bridge-E" chips will turn out to be 2P-capable; or maybe the existence of this motherboard answers that question. Sockets are wired to eight DDR3 DIMM slots (two per channel), while socket 1 has four (one per channel). This shows that the two sockets can be asymmetrically populated with DIMMs,much like 2P LGA1366 systems.

We also find that there are two BGA chips. The first is a platform controller hub (PCH). As for expansion slots, there are seven PCI-Express x16 slots; four are PCI-Express 3.0 x16 capable, every slot is PCI-Express 3.0 x8 capable. NVIDIA 4-way SLI is supported. In terms of storage connectivity, there are, according to EVGA, 14 SATA ports. Other connectivity includes 8+2 channel HD audio, two GbE connections, USB 3.0, eSATA, Bluetooth, and EVBot connections.
According the EVGA, only the highest of quality parts are used on the SR-3.

Each CPU socket is powered by a 6+1 phase digital PWM power supply driven by CPL inductors, and Volterra PWM circuitry. RAM is powered by 8-phase digital PWM MOSFETS. Apart from the 24-pin ATX connector, power is drawn in by two 8-pin EPS, and three 6-pin PCIe connectors, which will ensure ample power is provided.

Other features include: EVBot support (the module could even come bundled), onboard DIP switches that let you toggle PCI-Express slots and SATA ports, consolidated voltage measurement points, and a UEFI firmware.

Release date and pricing for this board are still unknown at this time.

Looks fake, but if it's not, totally un-necessary for ANYONE.

Not anyone... 99% of people yes. Enad, you seem so against high end hardware

Not everyone buys hardware on a budget, or for practical reasons.

lol my $500 Graphics card was deffinitely budget friendly.

It's not the price, but who the hell needs...how ever many DIMM slots there are and 8 PCI-E Slots.

Your a gamer :P. Plus it isn't targeted for gamers or even majority of the enthusiasts. its for breaking world records.

@Strud E-ATX really? I thought it was like its predecessor and take advantage of the HPTX form factor

Enad, you and I are gamers so indeed this motherboard is worthless for us. However many server companies and other people doing some sorts of extreme computing without supercomputers benefit greatly from this much memory. Anyway I thought this was fake too.

I do architectural rendering with physically modeled lighting... Trust me, there are plenty of people who need this type of motherboard, gamers, not so much. I've built an SR-2 based rig for myself, and three for various clients. In all cases it's allowed me to take $700 worth of processors and reliably overclock them to the performance of $2200 worth or retail processors. At only a $200 premium over a standard "server class" dual socket 1366 motherboard, they pay for themselves several times over, even when you include a premium for an HPTX compatible case and some big honking heatsinks. Oh, and they fly like a bat out of hell!

Apparently this motherboard will be named, or is codenamed "SR-X".

I like that better. SR-3 didn't make too much sense.
