• ASUS Sabertooth Z77 Details

ASUS recently announced their next edition to their TUF (The Ultimate Force, yes... cheesy I know.) series motherboards, the Sabertooth Z77. The previous TUF series, featured extra plastic shielding similar to the Z77, but much more chaotic and didn't help the board out much as far as visuals. It seems though that with this series, ASUS got it right.

Z77 is based on the Intel chipset for the upcoming Ivy bridge based processors. These motherboards will have a slightly altered feature set which should help future-proof yourself from the next wave of intel CPUs. The Z77 is also backwards compatable with the older style Sandy Bridge Socket 1155 based processors. The changes for Z77 primarily can be found in native USB 3.0 support as well as an upgrade towards PCie gen 3 PCIe x16 slots.

In the above image we can see a bit of the box with all the various components included. In the pile we find the motherboard, SATA cables, manual SLI bridge, two fans and well the standard. Also included are PCIe x16 slot covers which is a nice touch.

And here we see a nice view of the I/O ports featured on the motherboard. We see lots of modern features such as USB3, ESATA, Optical SPDIF, and HDMI.

And, lots of SATA ports for that massive RAID array of yours.

Overall, it looks seems like a solid board (pun!), but I'm sure that a lot of people will question the overall compatibility of the height of the Vreg area around the CPU. There are likely many CPU coolers that will not be compatible with this board.

I hate that plastic shield, but ASUS boards are some of the best out there and they'd be my #1 pick for Z77.

I guess I could have an open mind about the plastic shield... maybe seeing the computer all together may make me change my mind. Awesome motherboard besides that.
