• Lian-Li PC-V2120 Preview

With the release of the GTX 480 and the EVGA SR-2 Classified motherboard, people have been wanting a good case that supports the HPTX form factor and quadruple video card setups. Lian-Li already had such a case, the PC-P80, but it is rather outdated and not quite as nice as some of their other cases. Lian-Li has another HPTX and quad GPU compatible case coming up, dubbed the PC-V2120.

    Details

The "V" series cases from Lian-Li are their absolute highest quality cases. They feature a compartmentalized design for better airflow as well as other very innovative features. The Lian-Li PC-V2120 is built for those who want an absolutely solid and stylish case, and it is meant to satisfy those who prefer air cooling or water cooling with top of the line components such as the EVGA SR-2 Classified motherboard and quadruple video card setups. So lets take a closer look at this case.

As the image at the top of this article shows, this case will be available in black (PC-V2120B) and silver (PC-V2120A). However many people complain about the lack of an all black Lian-Li case, aside from the more budget friendly Lancool series. Luckily for these people, there will be an all black version called the PC-V2120X! Lian-Li is really looking to satisfy everyone with this case.

The top image shows that this case has a door. As you can see this door has sound dampening foam and is spring loaded. There are ventilation holes all along the sides to provide proper airflow for the two front 140mm intake fans. The spring loaded mechanism is easy to remove so that the door can be set to swing open from the other side. It can be secured with a single thumbscrew and the door can be locked. The power button and reset button are behind the door along with a fan control knob, and the case has five optical drive bays with ventilated covers that double as a dust filter.

Here is the said fan control knob.

The I/O panel is located on the top of the case. They include four USB 3 ports, a firewire port, an e-SATA port and standard headphone/mic jacks.

Unlike other Lian-Li cases, this one can hold up to a 360mm radiator without buying an additional top panel!

Very high end aluminum casters are included. The back set can lock into place.

The back of the case has two rubberized holes for an external water cooling system's tubes to pass through.

The case features 11 ventilated expansion slots with extra ventilation next to them, where you can mount their optional VGA cooling bracket.

One of the expansion slots has can be used for cable management for USB 3 ports and devices.

They include a 120mm rear exhaust fan. By the way, every fan in this case has rubber anti-vibration pads. Excellent!

Lian-Li's flagship side panel design is implemented on this case. The side panels are secured by a single thumbscrew. To remove the side panels, remove the thumbscrew and this allows you to lift the side panel out of place. They use a very high quality spring loaded mechanism which makes installation and removal of side panels much easier, and the side panels don't vibrate. The left side panel can be secured with an additional lock.

Both side panels have sound dampening foam as well.

This is quite a roomy case.

This case supports micro ATX, standard ATX, extended ATX, XL-ATX and HPTX form factor motherboards. In this shot you can see the VGA support bracket which offloads the weight of long video cards from the motherboard. It is the large pillar right in front of you. As you can see the case has a CPU retention plate access hole, although not quite large enough for all setups especially HPTX motherboards, and the motherboard tray also has several cable management holes. This case has no sharp edges so you and cables won't get cut.

    The motherboard tray is removable.

Here is the CPU retention plate access hole. This allows you to remove or replace your CPU cooler or water block without removing the motherboard.

There are three 140mm intake fans at the front of the case. The two at the very front draw air in from outside of the case. They each have their own dust filter but accessing them requires removing these fans, but removing these fans is actually a rather simple task. The obvious fan in this image circulates the same air around the case. This fan provides good GPU cooling too considering its position.

Seven hard drives can be mounted behind the front 140mm fans. This hard drive cage is held into place by two thumbscrews for easy removal. Three more hard drives can be mounted in the other cage, so that's 10 internal hard drive mounts total, 6 of which are isolated from the rest of the case, that is in the bottom compartment. This is an ideal place for hard drives for two reasons. The first being that this is the coolest area of the case, and hard drives don't even run very hot these days anyway. The second reason is that the heat from the hard drives won't contaminate the rest of the case.

Hard drive installation is a tool free design. All you have to do is mount the special thumbscrews with anti-vibration pads onto the hard drive, and then slide the hard drive into place.

A 3.5" to 2.5" adapter is included, on which you can mount two slim 2.5" drives.

A standard ATX power supply also gets installed in the bottom section. It has rubber anti-vibration pads which also ensures that the power supply won't get scratched, and it has its own ventilation.

Here is an image of the PSU ventilation from the bottom of the case.

They include a removable, washable dust filter for this area too.

Two of the optical drive bays have a tool free design.

The locks for these optical drive bays are aluminum, opposed to plastic used on most other brand cases. They include rubber to absorb vibrations but sadly they are only on one side, so you may wish to use a screw or thumbscrew on the other side. The other optical drive bays require screws or thumbscrews.

The 11 expansion slots use thumbscrews.

The compartment separator has cable management holes.

You can even secure two 2.5" drives on the compartment separator.

Even installing the motherboard is a tool free procedure, thanks to the aluminum motherboard thumbscrews.

As you can see the Lian-Li PC-V2120 is designed for anyone. Attention to detail is remarkable. Lian-Li is known for making all aluminum, very solid cases. This case is a nice step up for them. It includes plenty of drive bays, lots of tool free designs, good airflow, a CPU retention hole, removable motherboard tray, great water cooling potential, USB 3 support, HPTX form factor support, quad video card support and the list just goes on and on. Unfortunately the release date and release price are unknown but judging by how complete everything looks, expect it to be sometime this month.

Damn that's a clean looking case, and lots of nice solutions, though If I'd have a quad GPU setup with the SR-2 I'd want a window ^^

A window would be nice, perhaps it will be sold separately or the PC-V2120X will have it since it is all black. No point of a painted interior without a window. Strudinox is going to have to buy this case eventually.

By the way, here is a link to the mid tower version.

Awesome review. It looks like a very well built case with exceptional care to detail. Wouldn't mind trading up for my TT armor lol.

Update - a source told me that the PC-V2120X will not come with a windowed side panel by default. It is still not known if one will be sold separately. Not a big deal for me though.

That is such a nice case. Price maybe lower, but still way to much for me lol.
